Senior Class Awarded $7 Million in Scholarships

On Tuesday, May 20, the Senior Awards Ceremony recognized the achievements of many members of the 2008 senior class.  Among the accomplishments was the stunning total of more than $7 million in scholarship funding awarded to this group of outstanding students.

The ceremony concluded with Principal Karen Neal announcing five recipients of the "Principal's Award" given to students who demonstrate leadership, positive attitude, concern for others, teamwork, and a commitment to academics:  Mildred Arcovedo, Trevoy Dunn, Diana Guiterrez, Andrew McCleskey, Veronica Regalado, and Zachary Sutton.

Special congratulations to graduating seniors Doug Hale and Chuck Zhou who received appointments to West Point, the nation's oldest service academy, by United States Congressman Pete Sessions.  Their appointments are valued at approximately $350,000 each, and upon graduation they will be commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the United States Army where they will serve for 5 years.

Will Your Child’s Picture be in the Yearbook?

An Important Word About DIRECTORY INFORMATION

Parents, when completing the DIRECTORY INFORMATION card you receive in your child’s registration packet, please read the instructions carefully! Failing to check the boxes accurately can result in your child’s exclusion from a variety of school activities and services. In order for your child’s name and photo to appear in the directory section of the yearbook, you MUST release his name, photograph and grade level for RISD School Sponsored Purposes. Every year we have broken-hearted students and disappointed parents who did not realize that by failing to turn in a Directory Information card, or by failing to complete it accurately, they were being excluded from the portrait section of the yearbook – don’t be among them!

Check out Yearbook Central

Visit Yearbook Central on the Pearce home page (you’ll see the link on the right) to get the latest information about our exciting 2009 yearbook, important deadlines, school pictures, advertising and much more!

RECORD YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS NOW

Our school will get the recognition it deserves!  Simply go to the PTA website at www.jjpearcepta.org and click on 'Volunteer Hours'.  You can get to this website quickly from the link at the top of this enewsletter. OR email your name, the dates and hours you worked, and the activity to one of the email addresses below.

Volunteer Hours include attending meetings, baking, and helping with any school event—anything that you or your student

does for Pearce that does not result in a grade.  Always include 15 minutes driving time to and from school—and keep track

of the time you spend running errands on behalf of a school event.  You may record your hours in a combined total and enter

a general description of your activities.

If you signed in at the event, those hours have already been submitted and should not be duplicated.

Editor's Note:

Your PTA made a commitment 4 years ago to produce a weekly electronic newsletter. This has become an invaluable source of information for the Pearce community and is dependent on timely submissions from administration, teachers and booster clubs. As I end my two year commitment as your editor, I want to thank those of you who have written articles, submitted photos, and read and encouraged your friends to read and subscribe to the PTA newsletter. I hope all future mustangs will make that same commitment. Communication is vital to the strength of our Pearce community!
