NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS
Next meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 3 during
all lunches in Room A209.
Applications for NHS will be distributed to all eligible
students in their English classes approximately the
first week in October. Cumulative GPA must be a 90 or
above to receive an application before going through the
selection process. All sophomores, juniors and seniors
will be given application information at the same
time AFTER class rank/GPAs become available for all
these students.
national merit semifinalists named
Richardson Independent School District announced that 17
seniors have been named National Merit Semifinalists for
the 2007-2008 academic year, making them eligible for
consideration to receive a National Merit Scholarship.
Nine of them are PHS students. They are: Matthew Banks,
Ian Campbell, Rachel Fox, Andrew Kooiman, Lindsey
Larson, Amy Leiser, Joseph Lin, Harry Liu, and Parker
Staats
The students represent some of the top academic
performers in the United States. More than 1.4 million
juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the 2008
National Merit Program by taking the 2005 PSAT which
serves as the initial screen of program entrants. They
represent less than one percent of U.S. high school
seniors and the highest scoring entrants in each state.
The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional
to the state’s percentage of the national total of
graduating seniors.
“These outstanding students deserve congratulations for
a job well done,” said RISD Superintendent Dr. David
Simmons. “To be named among the best is a great boost
for them in anticipation of their college years ahead.
The district is proud of them.”
Students enter the National Merit competition by scoring
well on PSAT tests, usually taken junior year, and
advance in the program based on their skills,
accomplishments and subsequent SAT scores. These
academically talented high school seniors have an
opportunity to continue in the competition to receive
one or more of 8,200 merit scholarships worth more than
$30 million.
Approximately 90 percent of semifinalists are expected
to be named National Merit Finalists in February.

Talley and Son opens
this week
Talley and Son takes place on July 4, 1944 as
the Talley family prepares to welcome home their

must be made about an offer to buy their garment
factory and what is to be done with their bank
if old man Talley doesn't recover. It is a
family drama that features Nick Bancroft as Mr..
Talley, John Redlinger and Caitlyn
Bertrand and his two children, Eldon and
Lottie. Sara Saco is Eldon's wife and
David Escamilla and Evan Schutza are
their sons, with Christin Felts as he
wife. Taylor Daniel plays the washer
woman and Brittany Jones plays her
daughter. Kane Kaualoku is the handyman
and Tim Sekiguchi is the partner.

include 15 minutes driving time to and from school—and
