Pearce has an “Astronaut” Teacher!

Lance Belin, Mathematics teacher and Wranglers sponsor at PHS, has been participating in the High School Aerospace Scholars Program for the last 6 years.  This highly selective program, chosen by state legislators involves a six month interactive on-line learning experience, highlighted by summer internships at NASA Johnson Space Center.  This year, Mr. Belin also was invited on a special physics project, entitled “Reduced Gravity” in which he created experiments on the zero gravity aircraft.  To be eligible, Mr. Belin underwent a FAA Aviation physical, additional training and was certified in NASA’s Physiological Training.  Mr. Belin found the flight “amazing and almost beyond description”.

pearce choir can't stop the beat

The Pearce A Cappella choir started early this year working on music for the RISD Superintendent’s Convocation for all the RISD.  They prepared two pieces to fit the convention’s theme “Keep on Dancing,” including a classical piece by Donato “Come Dance the Galliard,” and the ever popular “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from the musical, Hairspray.  The dancing portion of the songs was choreographed by Trustee (Pearce Mom), Kim Quirk.  Thanks to Mrs. Quirk, directors Michael Lysinger and Laura Taylor for this beginning of an exciting year for the Pearce choirs.

jj pearce kicks off the year in style

The weather cooperated, and summer storms were sent packing to the north, opening a cool, breezy night for the Pearce Athletic Booster Club’s annual Kick-off Cookout.  More than 1000 people enjoyed the gathering that featured fall athletes and entertainment from Pearce’s various performing groups.  Also unveiled was Pearce’s resurrected fight song last sung by the school in the early ‘80s.

Pearce athletic director Randy Robertson emceed the event and welcomed parents, students, neighbors, feeder school families, other Pearce supporters and principal Karen Neal. “We gather here tonight to kick off our athletic season, but this great event is also to celebrate all the incredible things going on at Pearce High School,” said Neal.

While commenting that Pearce students had “brains to go with their brawn,” she announced that Pearce had achieved Recognized status, had just been named a Blue Ribbon School by the Texas Business Education Coalition and that its choir has been chosen as the top honor choir in the state and will perform at the Texas Music Educator’s Association conference in San Antonio.

Tip off began with Forte, PHS’s pop vocal ensemble, singing “The Star Spangled Banner.”  Entertainment continued with the Mighty Mustang Band, who premiered a portion of their contest piece, and the award winning Pacesetters performing their traditional routine– both dazzling the capacity crowd.  Making their inaugural debut was Stampede, a 36 member country western dance troop of male and female students.  The three cheerleading squads – varsity, junior varsity and freshmen -  each performed cheers, jumps and stunts and showed their enthusiasm for the upcoming sport events.  Also introduced were the members of the Wranglers and the PHS color guard.

The evening concluded with Coach Robertson introduced varsity football players who were followed by other fall sports participants including volleyball and cross country.  Volunteers cooked and served more than 3000 hot dogs that were generously underwritten by Albertson’s.  Additional entertainment and giveaways came from the Wolf 99.5 Special thanks go to Nancee Wenning and Cynthia Green who co-chaired the annual outing

“This is a true family gathering to celebrate our past, present and future,” Neal added.  “It’s a great time to be a Pearce Mustang!” For more information on fall athletic activities, visit www.Pearcesports.com

Record your summer volunteer hours now

RECORD YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS NOW!  Simply go to the PTA website at www.jjpearcepta.org and click on 'Volunteer Hours' OR email your name, the dates and hours you worked and the activity to one of the email addresses below.  This information is used in garnering awards for our school and promoting Pearce and RISD within the state and country in various areas such as real estate, business development and RISD development. The recognition that we receive for the volunteer hours worked strengthens the reputation of our school and our neighborhoods and benefits us all. Volunteer Hours include attending meetings, baking, and helping with fundraisers such as the Mum Store or any Booster Club or school event—anything that you or your student does for Pearce that does not result in a grade. Always include 15 minutes driving time to and from school—and keep track of the time you spend running errands on behalf of a school event. You may record your hours in a combined total and enter a general description of your activities. Remember, the NUMBER of hours is much more important than a detailed description of the volunteer activity! If you have already signed in at the Mum Store or at another event, those hours have already been submitted and should not be duplicated. Thank you for supporting JJ Pearce!
