Email Update for October 15, 2007

Countless thanks go to the hundreds of volunteers who gave of their
time to hand make each and every one of of the mums and garters made
for Homecoming. Thousands of hours were given to Pearce High School to ensure
that this was a very special day and evening for our students.

Five years ago, a vision was formed by former PTA President, Cathy Scheurer,
to make Homecoming an inclusive event for all students. Keeping the costs down for all students
by providing a high quality mum, garter or friendship mum was the goal of this community project.
The mum store has become much more than a fund raiser for Pearce High School.
It has become a community networking center.

Each of the participating organizations will receive a share of the net profits of the mum store.
100% of the money earned will directly impact the students at Pearce High School.

Thank you to all parents and students who purchased mums and garters for this very special day.

The biggest thank you goes to the PTA Mum Store Chairs - Vicki Barrett and Michelle Gilliland.
All that was achieved could not have been done without their tireless efforts.
They always had a smile on their faces and were very upbeat and encouraging.
Thank you to their families who were very supportive of them and
willingly shared these two dedicated women to the community.

Pearce High School to Induct Former Athletes into Hall of Honor

J. J. Pearce High School will recognize three former athletes as the 2007 inaugural inductees into the Pearce Athletic Hall of Honor.  Jeff Agoos, Rich Coady and Scott Turner will all be on hand during halftime at Pearce’s October 26 football game at Eagle-Mustang Stadium.

“We all know that Pearce produces outstanding student-athletes, and we wanted to find a way to honor those who have had distinguished athletic careers,” said David Colley, Pearce Athletic Booster Club officer.  “The Hall of Honor will be a permanent display at the school to set the standard for all Pearce athletic programs – past, present and future.”

Jeff Agoos, a graduate in 1983, is the most decorated player in Major League Soccer (MLS) history and was a nine time MLS all-star.  He led Pearce to the 1983 state championship and was a two-time “Parade Magazine” all-star.  Following his career at Pearce, Jeff was a four-year starter at the University of Virginia.  Jeff played for the Dallas Sidekicks and the San Jose Earthquakes, where he won his fourth and fifth MLS championships.  In between, he played for the USA soccer team and was member of the 1998 and 2002 US World Cup squads.  Jeff was named the All-time Best XI before retiring in 2005.

The second inductee, Richard Coady IV, was in the Pearce class of 1994 where his stellar football included first team all-district and all-Metroplex , captain of the team and also a varsity letter in basketball.  After walking onto Texas A&M, he played in the Alamo Bowl, Cotton Bowl and Sugar Bowl and was a member of two Big 12 Championship teams.  Rich was selected to the All-Big 12 First Team and was also named an academic athlete.   As a third round draft pick in the National Football League (NFL), Rich played for the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans.  He was on the winning side of Super Bowl XXXIV and also played two years later in Super Bowl XXXVI.

Varsity captain for both football and track, Scott Turner is the third honoree.  He graduated from JJP in 1989, and was a member of the first Pearce football team in school’s history to go to the playoffs.  At the University of Illinois, Scott was the recipient of 12 varsity letters, including four each in football, indoor track and outdoor track.  He was Indoor Track Freshman of the Year, two-time Big Ten 400 Meter Indoor Champion and an All American 400 meter runner.  In the 1993 World University Games, he was a Gold Medalist in the 4 x 400 meter relay.  Scott played nine seasons in the NFL including three for the Washington Redskins, four in San Diego and two for the Denver Broncos.

J.J. Pearce Students Honor Family Members during Homecoming Week.

Pearce seniors Daniel Shnider and Taylor Van Donk used dress-up day at Pearce High School during Homecoming week festivities to honor family members who served in the military.  Daniel wore his grandfather’s Navy uniform which was a perfect fit.  His grandfather, Bill Wells, served in the Navy in the 1950’s.  Daniel was excited about the opportunity to remember Mr. Well’s service for his country in this way.  “It made my mother proud of me that I wanted to do this for him” said Daniel.  Taylor Van Donk wore her father’s Navy uniform.  Lt. Commander Jason Van Donk just recently retired from active duty.  Taylor said, “His heart and soul has been with the Navy ever since “93…by wearing his uniform, I wanted to honor him, as well as everyone else in the military, for their hard work and dedication to this country.  Both students are involved in numerous activities at Pearce including National Honor Society and Wranglers.

Tips for Parents

A pain in the backpack

Back-to-school time means back to pain time for some kids who carry too much weight in their backpacks.  When that happens, they tend to hunch over and the mid- and lower-back muscles can become overworked.  The weight can cause pain in the neck, back or shoulders and even tingling in the arms and hands.

  • Don’t let your student carry more than 10 percent to 15 percent of his or her body weight.

  • Encourage your child to wear both shoulder straps, instead of just one.  Help adjust the straps so the weight of the pack rests against his or her body.

  • Choose a well-designed backpack with thick, padded straps, a padded back and a waist belt if necessary.

  • Help your student learn to pack the heaviest items in the center of the bag and to carry only what’s essential.

RECORD YOUR VOLUNTEER HOURS NOW!  Simply go to the PTA website at www.jjpearcepta.org and click on 'Volunteer Hours' OR email your name, the dates and hours you worked and the activity to one of the email addresses below.  Volunteer Hours include attending meetings, baking, and helping with fundraisers such as the Mum Store or any Booster Club or school event—anything that you or your student does for Pearce that does not result in a grade. Always include 15 minutes driving time to and from school—and keep track of the time you spend running errands on behalf of a school event. You may record your hours in a combined total and enter a general description of your activities. Pearce's own Officer Orton has a new column in the weekly Enews. You may submit your questions regarding teenagers and the law each week by sending an email to PearceNews. Officer Orton will answer questions ranging from curfews to truancy to drugs and alcohol.

This week's question comes from a parent concerning curfews for teens:

Dear Officer Orton,

A friend of mine's 15 year old son was taken to the Dallas Police Station recently when he and some other guys were out at a park. It was 11:30 pm and the policeman said he was violating curfew laws. My friend thought that since her son had her permission to be out, that it was okay. Can you clarify what those laws are?

Yes, Richardson and Dallas have curfew laws which cover all individuals under the age of 17. Laws are enforced! Don't allow your child to talk you into believing they are not. Violation may result in up to a $500 fine. The curfew is Sunday through Thursday - under 17 must be home by 11:00 pm. On Friday and Saturday the curfew for under 17 is Midnight. Exceptions may include school activities, church events or employment.

Parkhill PTA Parking Lot Sale and Mum Sale this saturday

This Saturday, Oct, 20 from 8 am – 4 pm

Help Parkhill have an outstanding first, ever Parking Lot Sale!

You can help by:

1.  Renting a booth – for a $30 donation to Parkhill PTA you get a double wide parking space to sell crafts, garage sale items, etc.  This is your opportunity to gather your friends or neighbors and do a joint booth – or – your scout troop or club to hold a fundraiser.

2. Shop – come on the 20th and shop the different booths and listen to the choir, band and orchestra perform.

3.  Purchase the beautiful pots of mums for your fall decorations.  PTA is selling 5 different colors of mums for $15 (which includes tax) on Friday from 2:30-5 and Saturday from 9-1 during the Parking Lot Sale.

Lacrosse team fundraiser

The Plano East Lacrosse team is having their annual garage sale on Saturday, October 20 from 8am – 1pm in the Bowman Middle School parking lot. Lacrosse is not a UIL sport yet (which means the players pay for everything) so we count on this fundraiser to help fund uniforms, referees, fields, etc. Please come and support your eastside lacrosse team and meet some PELA players (grades 9 – 12)! (If you’d like to donate items to the garage sale, contact Kristi Pearl  or 972.578.7847. Former Pearce students, Trevor Cobbs, Trent Jackson, Pete Stacey, and Zach Glass are past members of this Lacrosse team.
