students give tutor.com rave reviews

Several hundred RISD students are now participting in the Tutor.com program that RISD introduced just a few weeks ago. Students are giving the program high marks and leaving some nice comments such as, "I feel like a physics genius now. It was wonderful." Every 7th - 12th grader can sign up for their free 300 minutes of tutoring by going to www.tutor.com and entering the unique code that was included in a letter sent to their home. Students can then connect to a tutor during after-school hours when they get stuck. Tutor.com has more than 2000 tutors who can help students with math, science, social studies or English. If you or your child has questions about this exciting program, contact Liz Morse or call her at 469-593-0300.

attention all parents of college bound students

The Financial Aid Seminar is Thursday, December 6 in the PHS Corral.  It will be hosted by the Pearce Counselors.  There will be a brief PTA Meeting at 6:45 pm.  The Seminar will begin at 7:00 pm. This seminar is open to any Pearce parent who would like to begin to prepare financially for their teenagers' college education.

Attention: Change in FAFSA Distribution for 2008–09
For 2008–09 paper FAFSAs will
not be available for order in bulk. Students will be able to obtain a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or by visiting www.edpubs.org. Students may request up to three copies of the paper application and should receive their FAFSAs in three to seven business days.

New for 2008–09 is a PDF version of the FAFSA that students can submit for processing. Beginning in mid-November the PDF will be available for download on various Federal Student Aid Web sites, such as www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov. Students can access the PDF, complete the form on the computer or by hand, and mail it to the address provided for processing. Schools will also be able to access the PDF from www.FSAPubs.org.

With your support, we will continue to encourage students to use the online method for filing the application. The FAFSA on the Web Worksheet, the most effective tool students can use to facilitate the online application process, will still be available for bulk order by schools. In addition, Federal Student Aid has several promotional publications that list application resources, explain how students can file the FAFSA, and provide tips for completing the application. In mid-November, we will include some of these items in our Toolkit mailing to all high schools, libraries, and other community organizations on our mailing list.

Why We Made This Change
While we have successfully decreased reliance on the paper FAFSA over the last several years, until now, Federal Student Aid has continued to print and distribute millions of unused paper forms to schools each year. Approximately 500,000 paper FAFSAs have been processed to date for 2007–08. For the same period in 2006–07, there were 778,000 forms processed. These numbers represent almost a 50 percent decline in the number of paper applications processed. Understanding the importance of this trend, Federal Student Aid concluded that our new distribution strategy not only reduces waste and costs, it also provides students with viable alternatives for completing and submitting the FAFSA.

Help Us Keep in Touch With You
We plan to increase our use of e-mail as a communication vehicle; please visit www.FSAPubs.org and check your account information to confirm that we have the correct e-mail address for you. FSAPubs is the one-stop source for ordering all of Federal Student Aid’s free publications. Please review the attachment for information on a few of our most popular publications.

Thank you again for your continued support in moving to alternate methods of completing the FAFSA. If you have any questions or comments about the information provided in this letter, please email us at FAFSA.Comments@ed.gov.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Douglas

band news

Pearce Band Participates in State Competition!

Getting up with the birds may be nearly over for our Pearce Mighty Mustang Band marchers now that football season is winding down to the playoff season!  But the memories of participating in the State of Texas UIL Marching Band competition will last forever.  There are 223 bands that march under the 4A classification in the state of Texas.  Of those bands, 197 participated in their individual region competitions over the last few weeks.  This past Tuesday, the Mighty Mustang Band of Pearce, was among 25 winners of these competitions which moved on to the state competition at the Alamodome in San Antonio.  It was quite a privilege to be among the best of the best in Texas with many Pearce parents, relatives and friends making the trip to San Antonio to support their favorite band!

The MMB did us proud by coming in at 11th place out of all 25 champion bands.  None of this trip would have been possible without the support of RISD and their Director of Fine Arts, Mike Brashear, as well as the Pearce Area Band booster club.  Congratulations on a job VERY well done by the band directors Greg Hames, Joshua Blankenship, Stephen Lisko, Renee Butts and Andy Pruyn.  A HUGE pat on the back to every MMB member that has devoted countless hours practicing and perfecting each and every note and step in a magnificent and entertaining program!

building the pearce legacy brick by brick

On November 8, 2007 the Pearce Athletic Booster Club and the Legacy Brick Steering Committee kicked off the PABC Legacy Brick Campaign.  This campaign is "Building the Pearce Legacy Brick by Brick" and will create a new showplace at Pearce outside the school entrance to the Gymnasium composed of engraved bricks commemorating students, alumni, faculty and community leaders.  Funds from the Legacy Brick Campaign will not only create this showplace but will also be used for some exciting new beautification and branding projects at Pearce benefiting all students.  You will not want to miss this opportunity to be among the first bricks to be laid.

You choose what your brick will say and what logos are used among many choices.  Click Here to view logo choices. Forms are available at the Pearce Information Desk or Click Here to download the form.  Your brick number will be assigned by when your order is received.  In other words, the earlier it is received, the lower brick number you will get!

Bricks cost $50 and payment must be made by cash or check when the order is placed.  Since many of you will want to order multiple bricks, remember that you must fill out an order form for each brick ordered.  Bricks make a great holiday, birthday, graduation, coach or teacher gift.  Forms may also be turned in at the Information Desk.

For further information please contact Sally Field at (972) 387-1914.

A STAMPEDE OF THANKS from the Pearce Athletic Booster Club and Mustang Stampede to the JJP community for supporting Reliable Chevrolet's "Toss for 10 Mustangs Win" Nerf Football Contest November 2. Through your generous support the event raised close to $1,000 in ticket sales and contributions.

Congratulations to Bill Silverman, Michael Koval, BJ Miller, Kevin Burnham, and Steve Fleming whose names were drawn to participate in the halftime contest.  Each of the 5 lucky contestants had one try to toss a nerf football 35 yards into an open window of a new Reliable Chevrolet Tahoe--with hopes of hitting the target and winning 5,000 in cash for themselves, and another $5, 000 for Pearce organizations.  While no one hit the target, we appreciated their enthusiastic participation!

2008 graduates casino party information

Last Week for Early Payment Bonus Chips

On the night of graduation, the parents of graduating seniors have traditionally hosted and chaperoned an alcohol and drug free event.  Our hope is to discourage drinking and driving and to encourage our graduates to get together one last time for an evening of fun and games. The party will be held the night of graduation June 7, 2008 from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. at the Summit Ballroom in Plano. There will be mock casino games, prizes for every ticket holder, bingo, a DJ and dancing, a mechanical bull, door prizes, food, and many other exciting activities...  The party is for Pearce seniors only.  It is not a date affair and dress will be casual.  Each family is asked to help underwrite this party with a $30 contribution.  Purchase your ticket early and save some $$$$.

We have instituted an early payment system that will allow your senior to receive extra casino chips.  These chips are exchanged at the party for a chance to win a number of fabulous gifts.  By receiving these funds early, it allows the committee more time to purchase gifts and add activities.

Early Payment before November 15 =$95.00 + 10,000 bonus chips

Payment from 11/16-3/15 = $105.00 + 5,000 bonus chips
