J.J. Pearce Mock Trial, led by Mr. Sean
Dowlatshahi heads to State!
Despite having only three returning members,
after graduating 9 last year, Pearce mock
trial team managed to reach the State
competitions for the third time in the last
8 years. The competing group is made-up of
one freshman, one sophomore, one junior, and
seven seniors. There are three members, two
freshmen and one sophomore, who helped the
competing group prepare for their task. The
competition was held over two Saturdays in
February. On Feb. 2nd, Pearce won all three
rounds against Caddo-Mills, McKinney Boyd,
and Coppell, which allowed them to advance
to the finals with seven other schools. On
Feb. 9th, they competed against Coppell and
Creekview, after which they finished third
and advanced to State competitions being
held on March, 6-8, at Crowley Courthouse in
Downtown Dallas. GO Mock Trial Mustangs!

from "school times now" - school board adopts
2008-2009 academic calendar
After considering available options and
evaluating input from students, parents and
staff, the RISD Board of Trustees adopted the
2008-2009 academic calendar during Monday
night's board meeting.
Highlights of the adopted calendar include
strategically-placed professional development
days, nearly an equal the number of days for the
fall and spring semester (87 days in the fall &
89 days in the spring), and holidays at
approximately the same time of year as the
current calendar. Finals, and the end of the
fall semester, will again occur after the winter
break. The first day of classes will again be
the fourth Monday in August (August 25, 2008),
the earliest districts may now begin classes per
the Texas legislature, and the driving force
behind the difficult decisions faced in adopting
this year’s calendar.
To view the complete 2008-09 calendar, please
click
here.
During their discussion, trustees recounted
feedback received from parents and staff,
including the issue of whether to keep first
semester finals after winter break.
“We are sensitive to the concerns we have
heard,” said trustee Carol Kent. “While we work
hard to balance preferences with the realities
of our situation, in the final analysis, we are
charged with doing what is best for students,
and we feel this academic calendar does that.
The legislature has tied our hands and taken
away our local control of this issue."
“This calendar is the best academic option for
students, said RISD Superintendent Dr. David
Simmons. “The equal number of semester days and
our ability to retain strategically-placed
professional development days are key to our
ongoing academic success. As a parent, the idea
of wrapping up final exams before Winter Break
is appealing, but as an educator, I know we’d be
shortchanging our students.”
Discussion prior to adoption of the 2008-09
Academic Calendar addressed some specific
issues:
-
While an unbalanced calendar option was
discussed that would have allowed first
semester finals to be completed prior to
winter break, the disparity in semester days
was simply too great from a curriculum
standpoint. Even accounting for mandated
testing days, students would still have lost
almost two weeks of instructional days from
the first semester.
-
It’s difficult to overstate the value of the
professional development days placed near
the end of each six-weeks grading period.
While these are student holidays, they are
essential to data analysis specific to
individual student performance, and teachers
and administrators use them to plan
interventions that directly benefit
students.
-
It was noted that administering finals
before or after winter break has a nominal
impact on the college admissions process.
For example, the University of Texas system
application deadlines for admission are
steadily being moved up each year to
ultimately be December 1 by 2010, when no
districts in Texas will likely have
completed finals. Most RISD seniors planning
to attend college the fall semester after
graduation submit their applications to
colleges or universities during the fall
semester of their senior year. The GPA and
class rank, based on classes taken through
the junior year, as well as the class
schedule for the senior year, are typically
submitted in the application process.
Scholarship deadlines for colleges vary, but are
typically due earlier in the fall semester of
the senior year. Thus, pre- or post-break finals
will typically have no impact on this process.

MUSTANGS ARE AREA PLAYOFF CHAMPS!
After earning a bye for the first round of the
playoffs, the Mustangs advanced directly to the Area
Finals with a game against Lindale. Many loyal
basketball fans made the trek to East Texas to see
their Stangs roll over the Indians. The team came
out hot and stayed hot, forcing Lindale turnovers
and shooting from all over the court. Firing
3-pointers were Papi Kaba, Chris Bowie, Nick
Sellers, Bryan Parker and Trevoy Dunn keeping
the Indians at a loss as to how to contain Pearce.
Bryan Parker had a solid performance with 26
points and Nick Sellers had a hot hand
with 15 points off the bench in a 42-78 rout.
Mustangs will return to the Regional
Quarterfinals for the 2nd time in 2 years and only
the 4th time in school history with a rematch
against Whitehouse. The game will be Tuesday at
7:30 pm at Mabank High School. The address
is 18786 E. Hwy 175, Mabank, Tx 75147. Click on this
link for
Driving Directions. Last year the
Mustangs beat Whitehouse in the Area Finals with a
shot at the buzzer so the Wildcats will no doubt be
out for revenge. It's certainly shaping up to be
quite a show. A new order of Playoff t-shirts has
arrived and will be on sale Tuesday at lunch for $5.
All sizes available.

PEARCE BOYS SOCCER news
The Boys JV team is at the top of the district with an UNDEFEATED record. Last Tuesday night, Feb 19th, they beat Frisco High School 3-0. Kevin Machado scored
two goals and David Steele scored 1. Frisco turned up the heat at the end of the game but a brilliant effort by defender Cameron Markey heading the ball out
of the goal robbed them of their chance to score. Another victory came last Friday night against Frisco Liberty. The Mustangs dominated the entire game
with goals scored by Chris Rossato, Omar Aguilar, Haron Abdel-Raziq, and John Emslie. The defense played tough and Pearce was able to shut out Liberty 4-0.
The Pearce Boys Varsity Soccer Team put it in high
gear Friday night to bring home a 6-0 win. Two
goals by Keegan Smith, and one goal each by
Ramon Laredo, Justin Butler, Juan Bonigno,
and Reece Markman proved that Pearce is back on
the winning track
The Pearce boys soccer teams play at HIGHLAND PARK on Tuesday, Feb. 26th and then at HOME on Friday, Feb. 29th against Frisco Wakeland. JV plays at 5:30
and Varsity plays at 7:15

Girls Varsity Soccer news
The Lady Mustangs brought home an impressive 9-
0 win against the Prosper Eagles at home on
Friday night, February 15th. It was a great
night for our Senior girls - Laura Flick and
Stephanie Pritchett each had 2 goals, with
Jenny Engelson and Katie Hughes also
putting one in the back of the net! The other
goals were scored by Maddie Harper, Taylor
Mathews and Kathryn Watson. It was a home
crowd pleaser with the Lady Mustang dominating
the game.
Tuesday, February 19th, the Mustangs had another
win against the Frisco Fighting Raccoons 3 - 0.
Goals were scored by Senior Stephanie
Pritchett with Kathryn Watson
assisting, Sophomore Kathryn Watson with
Taylor Gallagher assisting and Sophomore
Taylor Mathews with Stephanie Pritchett
assisting. The Frisco Fighting Raccoons played
an aggressive game as they wanted to keep their
District chances hopeful but came up short.
Strong defensive play by Kimberlee Earnest,
Maddie Harper, Gayle Ziegler and
goalkeeper Haley Newsom kept them
scoreless.
Go Mustangs! Keep the winning streak going ....

**Questions You May Have About the B & W Bash **
Is this event for dates only?
No, this event is for ALL Pearce Freshmen so come
one, come all and enjoy the fun.
If my child is asked to the dance, who pays for it?
There is no set tradition. It is whatever your
student and his/her date are comfortable with for
the dance.
What about groups of students going to dinner before
the dance?
That decision is at the discretion of the parent.
There will be no dinner at this event, but we will
have desserts and refreshments which are included in
the ticket price.
Can a student arrive any time between 8:00 and
11:00?
No. Students must arrive by 9:00 or they will not
be allowed to attend. Also, once a student leaves
the dance, he/she will not be allowed back in. Pick
up is promptly at 11:00.
What is appropriate to wear?
With the black and white theme, wearing these colors
would add to the atmosphere and fun. Since this is
not a formal dance, dressy casual attire will be
defined as dressier than jeans and not as dressy as
ballroom dresses-so something in between!
If my student has a date, do I need to purchase a
corsage or boutonniere?
No, this is not a formal dance.

attention senior parents
We
need your help to insure the success of the
“Casino Party”, the senior class’ after graduation
party, on June 7. Our goal is to create an event
that every senior will attend. The key to achieving
that goal is to have a lot of prizes! At least one
prize is guaranteed for each graduate. Students play
casino games to win chips and then trade the chips
for prizes. Some of the bigger items are used as
raffle prizes during the course of the night.
If
you personally, or through your business, can donate
a prize or obtain a significant discount, please
contact one of us. Here are some suggestions for
the types of prizes that we need: Gift
certificates or gift cards,
Radios/TVs/Cameras, Concert Tickets,
Computers/Accessories, Sports Equipment, Electronic
Items, Dorm Room Necessities, Sporting Event
Tickets, Car Accessories, Prepaid Debit Cards, Small
Appliances, Luggage, Cash, Desk Items, Mall Money
such as "Galleria Gold".
If a
senior parent donates a door prize with a retail
value of at least $25.00, his/her senior will
receive an extra 5,000 chips to use that evening!
For donations of greater value, even more chips will
be paid.
Thanks so much for your help! Please call us if you
have any questions about anything to do with the
Casino Party. Remember this is a
parent-sponsored event only for Pearce 2008
graduates. This is not a date event, and is
organized to provide our seniors with a safe, fun
celebration.

Action Alert from Texas PTA
Call Your Members of Congress - Support Afterschool Programs Take Action!
During the National Call in Day, MONDAY & TUESDAY, February 25th and 26th between 8AM-4PM CST President Bush is proposing a devastating cut to
afterschool program funds and a drastic restructuring of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program that would convert it to a voucher program.
The 21st Century Community Learning Centers program is the chief federal funding stream available for school districts to develop and provide quality
after-school learning opportunities. To show the strong opposition to this proposal, we are urging you to participate in a National Call In Campaign to
Support Afterschool Programs on February 25th and 26th. On these two days, we are asking PTA members across the nation to take a moment to call
their Members of Congress to express support for a continued investment in afterschool programs.
On February 26th US Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings will be testifying before the House Appropriations Committee responsible for afterschool
program funding. We want Members of Congress to know that their constituents do not support the President's proposal to cut and reconfigure the 21st
Century Community Learning Centers Program. Together we can send a message to Congress that afterschool programs are critically important to
the success of our children and youth and that the President's proposal should be rejected. The higher the volume of calls to Congress, the louder
our message will be, so encourage your partners, colleagues and friends to call in on behalf of the millions of youth who need a safe, productive and
inspiring place to go during the afterschool hours.
Congressional Representatives for our area: Senators: Kay Bailey Hutchinson (202)224-5922, John Cornyn (202) 224-2934
Representative: Pete Sessions (202) 225-2231
1) The President’s proposal to cut $300 million from 21st Century Community Learning Centers – the chief federal funding stream for afterschool
programs– is a serious mistake. It will be disastrous for afterschool programs and for the nation’s children and families.
2) If Congress agrees to this cut, hundreds of thousands of children will lose their afterschool programs.
3) The President’s proposal to convert the very successful 21st CCLC initiative into a risky voucher program will undermine existing public,
private and community partnerships that are working well. Replacing core funding for afterschool programs – funding which allows programs to hire
quality staff, develop partnerships and leverage additional funding -- with an unstable voucher funding system will pull the rug out from under quality
programs and leave millions of families with vouchers but no place to use them.
4) Study after study has found that afterschool programs keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families – but there aren’t nearly
enough programs across the country to meet the need. We urge you to increase funding for 21st Century Community Learning Centers, to build on the
investment made last year by Congress, and ensure that our youth have safe and enriching environments to go to in the afterschool hours.
