NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
SELECTION PROCESS
All students in grades 10,
11, and 12 who are not members of National Honor Society
will receive an application packet if they have a
CUMULATIVE 90 GPA or above. This GPA is calculated from
the beginning of 9th grade until the end of the spring,
2008 semester. It is the same GPA on which the recent
class ranking is based. All students who meet this
preliminary grade requirement should receive a packet in
their English class the first week in October.
National Merit Semifinalists Announced
Richardson Independent School District has announced that 9 seniors have been
named National Merit Semifinalists for the 2008-2009
academic year, making them eligible for consideration to
receive a National Merit
Scholarship.
The students represent some of the top academic
performers in the United States.
More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high
schools entered the 2008 National Merit Program by
taking the 2005 PSAT which serves as the initial screen
of program entrants. They represent less than one
percent of U.S. high school
seniors and the highest scoring entrants in each
state.
The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional
to the state’s percentage of the national total of
graduating seniors.
“These outstanding 20students deserve congratulations
for a job well done,” said RISD Superintendent Dr. David
Simmons. “To be named among the best is a great boost
for them in anticipation of their college years ahead.
The district is proud of them.”
Students enter the National Merit competition by scoring
well on PSAT tests, usually taken junior year, and
advance in the program based on their skills,
accomplishments and subsequent SAT scores. These
academically talented high school seniors have an
opportunity to continue in the competition to receive
one or more of 8,200 merit scholarships worth more than
$30 million.

This year's Theatre
III/IV class will be kicking off the
season with the hilarious comedy
Love, Lies and the IRS.
When Jon Tractman
(Clark Jones) realizes he can save a
lot of money each year in taxes by filing a
joint tax return, he conveniently changes
his roommate Leslie
(Brett Thiele) from a man to a woman.
Unfortunately, the IRS has become suspicious
when they realize four years ago Leslie was
a Male. They send IRS
auditor Floyd Spinner (Steven
Miller) to investigate and Leslie is
forced to masquerade as a woman with the
aide of Jon's fiancé
(Marisa Huber). The story
becomes even crazier when Jon's
mother (Taylor Daniel) shows
up to help plan a wedding and finds out he
is already married. The show promises to be
a laugh filled evening.
Also in the cast
are Jay Moran, Anna Dirkx and
Brendan Williams.
Assistant directors are Michelle
McCoy and Chandler Reeves. Please
join us for this very funny audit in the
Black Box Theatre
on Oct. 2, 4 at 7:30 or Oct. 5 at 2PM.

Mustangs Fall To HP
Pearce got off to a good start last Tuesday against
Highland Park going 3-4 in doubles action but hit
the skids in singles action losing to the No. 1 team
in the state 5-14. Strong performances were turned
by the doubles teams of Kyle Plum and Tam Trinh,
Yuji Soda and David Levin, and the mixed double team
of Jonny Kelley and Lindsey McKee. Singles action
winners were Kyle Plum and Tam Trinh.
It was a great chance for the Mustangs to see how
they measure up for the upcoming District and
Regional Team Tournaments at the end of October.
In non-district action last Friday, Pearce tamed the
Rams of Berkner 19-0.
A correction to last week’s Kyle Plum story. Kyle’s
oldest brother Andrew Plum is currently a senior on
the tennis team at Washburn University.
