National Merit Semifinalists Announced
Richardson Independent School District has announced that 9 seniors have been
named National Merit Semifinalists for the 2008-2009
academic year, making them eligible for consideration to
receive a National Merit
Scholarship.
The students represent some of the top academic
performers in the United States.
More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high
schools entered the 2008 National Merit Program by
taking the 2005 PSAT which serves as the initial screen
of program entrants. They represent less than one
percent of U.S. high school
seniors and the highest scoring entrants in each
state.
The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional
to the state’s percentage of the national total of
graduating seniors.
“These outstanding 20students deserve congratulations
for a job well done,” said RISD Superintendent Dr. David
Simmons. “To be named among the best is a great boost
for them in anticipation of their college years ahead.
The district is proud of them.”
Students enter the National Merit competition by scoring
well on PSAT tests, usually taken junior year, and
advance in the program based on their skills,
accomplishments and subsequent SAT scores. These
academically talented high school seniors have an
opportunity to continue in the competition to receive
one or more of 8,200 merit scholarships worth more than
$30 million.

This year's Theatre
III/IV class will be kicking off the
season with the hilarious comedy
Love, Lies and the IRS.
When Jon Tractman
(Clark Jones) realizes he can save a
lot of money each year in taxes by filing a
joint tax return, he conveniently changes
his roommate Leslie
(Brett Thiele) from a man to a woman.
Unfortunately, the IRS has become suspicious
when they realize four years ago Leslie was
a Male. They send IRS
auditor Floyd Spinner (Steven
Miller) to investigate and Leslie is
forced to masquerade as a woman with the
aide of Jon's fiancé
(Marisa Huber). The story
becomes even crazier when Jon's
mother (Taylor Daniel) shows
up to help plan a wedding and finds out he
is already married. The show promises to be
a laugh filled evening.
Also in the cast
are Jay Moran, Anna Dirkx and
Brendan Williams.
Assistant directors are Michelle
McCoy and Chandler Reeves. Please
join us for this very funny audit in the
Black Box Theatre
on Oct. 2, 4 at 7:30 or Oct. 5 at 2PM.

Mustang At The US Open
Pearce High School’s
own Kyle Plum made an appearance at this year’s US
Open in Flushing Meadow,
New York. Kyle had a great time and saw some high
caliber tennis. Even though he was just a
spectator, it shouldn’t be too long before he makes
the main draw of the tournament. Kyle’s two older
brothers Andrew, Pepperdine Univ., and Nick, Weber
State, both play in the college ranks and have set
the bar pretty high for Kyle by winning State
Doubles titles while at Pearce. Kyle, with his
style, is one of the more entertaining players to
watch on the Mustang courts this year and along with
doubles partner Tam Trinh hope to provide some key
wins in Tuesday’s district opening showdown with
Highland Park. This should be the first of three
team matchups with HP in the
Fall Team Tennis
Season. The second round should be for the District
Title and a third for the Region Championship and a
bid to the State Tournament in Austin.
This is No. 1 vs No. 5 in the state so come on out
Tuesday, 4 pm and bring your friends and root the
Mustangs on to a victory against the Scots.

Bahramnejad, 1st Lieutenant Hayley
Shelton, Jr. Lieutenant Hannah McGary, Jr.
Lieutenant Jennifer Montgomery, Jr. Lieutenant Paige
Waterman, Jr. Lieutenant Ashley Williams, attended
the first event of their tenure, the annual
Starmakers Officer Camp. The camp was held at the

awards in various categories:
Opening Night Routine: Superior Award

the opening night performance, the team also won the

highest award to be achieved. The girls learned and
rehearsed many dances in a short amount of time.
They worked hard and bonded with each other at the
same time. Captain Nadia Bahramnejad said “through
this experience, we proved to ourselves and to
others that we are ready to lead the team into
triumph and are well prepared to take on the task
that lies ahead of us in the coming year.” This
