Change in FAFSA Distribution for 2008–09
For 2008–09 paper FAFSAs will not be available for order in bulk. Students will be able to obtain a paper FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or by visiting www.edpubs.org. Students may request up to three copies of the paper application and should receive their FAFSAs in three to seven business days.

New for 2008–09 is a PDF version of the FAFSA that students can submit for processing. Beginning in mid-November the PDF will be available for download on various Federal Student Aid Web sites, such as www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov. Students can access the PDF, complete the form on the computer or by hand, and mail it to the address provided for processing. Schools will also be able to access the PDF from www.FSAPubs.org.

With your support, we will continue to encourage students to use the online method for filing the application. The FAFSA on the Web Worksheet, the most effective tool students can use to facilitate the online application process, will still be available for bulk order by schools. In addition, Federal Student Aid has several promotional publications that list application resources, explain how students can file the FAFSA, and provide tips for completing the application. In mid-November, we will include some of these items in our Toolkit mailing to all high schools, libraries, and other community organizations on our mailing list.

Why We Made This Change
While we have successfully decreased reliance on the paper FAFSA over the last several years, until now, Federal Student Aid has continued to print and distribute millions of unused paper forms to schools each year. Approximately 500,000 paper FAFSAs have been processed to date for 2007–08. For the same period in 2006–07, there were 778,000 forms processed. These numbers represent almost a 50 percent decline in the number of paper applications processed. Understanding the importance of this trend, Federal Student Aid concluded that our new distribution strategy not only reduces waste and costs, it also provides students with viable alternatives for completing and submitting the FAFSA.

Help Us Keep in Touch With You
We plan to increase our use of e-mail as a communication vehicle; please visit www.FSAPubs.org and check your account information to confirm that we have the correct e-mail address for you. FSAPubs is the one-stop source for ordering all of Federal Student Aid’s free publications. Please review the attachment for information on a few of our most popular publications.

Thank you again for your continued support in moving to alternate methods of completing the FAFSA. If you have any questions or comments about the information provided in this letter, please email us at FAFSA.Comments@ed.gov.

Sincerely,
Jennifer Douglas

tips for seniors

1.       Select 3 to 5 colleges to which you would like to apply

2.       Check online for application specifics - deadlines, fees, testing, etc.  Also check for scholarship, financial aid, and housing deadlines. APPLY ONLINE – keep your pin number in a safe place. Make sure your file is complete, then press the SUBMIT button.

3.       SAT/ACT need to be taken by Dec 2007 or January 2008 at the latest. Make sure scores are sent directly to the college from the testing agency.

4.       Letters of recommendation, if required, need at least one month advanced notice after you have turned in the parent insights, senior request form, and student info sheet.

5.       Transcript requests – Mrs. Nelson. Requires parent signature, an envelope with the college’s address, and 2 stamps (small envelope) or 4 stamps (large envelope).

6.       Double check every document before submitting

7.       FAFSA – apply ASAP after Jan. 1st

8.       Questions?? Contact your counselor and/or the college.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCHOLARSHIPS

  • Check the scholarship file ONCE A WEEK for new scholarships. Scholarship opportunities are placed in the file as they arrive.
  • IF THE FILE of the scholarship IS EMPTY, ask one of secretaries to run a scholarship application for you.
  • If a scholarship states that you cannot receive another scholarship if you accept that particular scholarship, APPLY FOR IT ANYWAY.
  • IF A SCHOLARSHIP REQUIRES YOU TO DO ANYTHING like read a book or write an essay, the other students do not want to do it either; therefore, the scholarship pool of applicants is smaller.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPTS
All colleges require a copy of your transcript. To request a transcript, fill out a “Transcript Request” form in the counselor's office.   Allow 2-3 days for processing. Transcripts must be mailed directly to the colleges. Your parent must sign the transcript release if you are under eighteen years of age. The first two transcripts are free. Additional ones cost $2.00 each, payable at the time of the request.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THEA
All college bound seniors are required to take the THEA test before registering for classes at any Texas public college or university. Students with the following scores are exempt from the THEA:

SAT and ACT scores - check with the individual college or university
TAKS- Language Arts-2200 or higher, Math-2200 or higher, Written Composition-3 or 4.
Go to www.thea.nesinc.com for registration and testing information.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
Texas state colleges and universities accept the State of Texas Common Application. Schools are encouraging students to apply online. You can access the Texas Common Application at www.applytexas.org. Many private colleges accept The Common Applications (http://www.commonapp.org/). Because some colleges have an earlier application deadline this year, students are encouraged to check the websites for their colleges’ deadlines (application, scholarship, housing etc).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FINANCIAL AID FORMS
It is recommended that you apply online for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), key to the vast majority of financial aid. We advise you to file ASAP after January 1, as this increases the likelihood of receiving a favorable financial package. See www.fasfa.ed.gov/ (note fafsa.com is not an approved government website).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SELECTIVE SERVICE
Male students who turn 18 must register with the Selective Service (www.sss.gov).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SERVICE LEARNING AWARD
Students must complete a minimum of thirty hours of volunteer service between June 1 and March 31. Eighteen of those hours can be completed with a school organization such as NHS, etc.; twelve hours are to be outside of school hours. Verification Forms should be returned to the SENIOR PRINCIPAL no later than April 1. Volunteer information websites are:
www.volunteernorthtexas.org- volunteer info
www.volunteerpowercrew.org-volunteer info

Top 10 Percent Rule for Admissions
Students who are in the top 10 percent of their graduation class are eligible for automatic admission to any public university in Texas. To be eligible for automatic admission, a student must:

  • Graduate in the top 10 percent of his or her class at a public or private school in Texas
  • Submit an application to a Texas public university for admissions by the institution’s application deadline (check with the university regarding deadlines).
  • Students admitted through this route may still be required to provide SAT/ACT scores. Students must also take the THEA test, unless exempt.
  • Admission to a university does not guarantee acceptance into a particular major or department or into a particular housing preference.
